File Synopsis: TURI created these fact sheets to build understanding about toxic chemical use and health and environmental effects, as well as the availability of safer alternatives. Since Massachusetts companies report usage under the Toxics Use Reduction Act, readers will learn how the chemicals are being used and by which companies. Exposure to arsenic for most people is through drinking water, breathing air and eating food. Elevated exposure levels have been reported for residents living near metal smelters or plywood burning facilities. Arsenic consumption has increased in the US due to its use as industrial chemicals, wood preservatives, electronics and chemical chemicals. However industrial chemicals, primarily wood preservatives have accounted for 88% of the arsenic consumption. Publication date: 2000
