About This Conference

Purpose: This event is specially designed for the certified Toxics Use Reduction Planner seeking to earn credits toward the continuing education requirement for recertification. The conference will provide opportunities to learn from presentations and other TUR Planner successes and challenges. The Conference is also open to others interested in the issues of toxics research, pollution prevention, and cleaner production.

Credit:  Department of Environmental Protection has approved this event for double credits. Attendance for a full day will be worth 12 credits. These credits may be used to apply to DEP for recertification.

Session A. Keynote Address from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM
Dr. Paul Anastas – What’s Happening in Green Chemistry
Dr. Anastas will speak on current trends in pollution prevention and Green Chemistry. A native of Quincy, MA, Dr. Anastas partnered with his Massachusetts colleague Dr. John Warner to author Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, the first comprehensive text in the field. Since 2009, Dr, Anastas has served as Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) and as the Science Advisor to the Agency. In February, he announced his resignation so he could return to Yale, where he is the Director of the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering.

Session B. Chemical Safety
Chemical Safety is an important complement to TUR Planning, and the session on this topic at last spring’s conference proved its importance and the extent of interest by Planners. We will bring back the MA Dept. of Fire Safety to explain the recently adopted Massachusetts Safety Regulations. We will also hear from an insurance industry representative and a TURA program lawyer about legal liabilities.

Session C. Green Materials I: Safer Alternatives
The first session on Green Materials will be devoted to new technologies for safer materials- such as less toxic plasticizers, efforts by GC3 to reduce the use of phthalates, and topics on Design for the Environment.

Session D. Metal Finishing: Moving to Safer Alternatives
The move toward alternatives to Hex Chrome is creating some practical challenges for metal finishers. This session will feature some real-life case studies from some metal finishers who have recently started working with alternatives like Trivalent Chrome.

Session E. Afternoon Plenary Address from 12:45 to 1:30 PM

Roger McFadden - Design for Environment and the Product Supply Chain

Mr. McFadden, VP and Senior Scientist at Framingham-based Staples, has been at the forefront of efforts by the retail sector to make products "green" - by reducing packaging, using recycled and recyclable materials, and being more energy efficiency.  Now, as a charter member of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3), Staples is in the midst of establishing an industry-leading policy governing restricted substances and materials throughout the supply chain for consumer and office products.  Roger will speak on how increasing concern about toxic substances and other sustainability issues is effecting the entire supply chain.

Session F. Research Poster Session 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM - Presentations on Green Chemistry advances, asthmagens and carcinogens, High Hazard Substance alternatives, and TURPA.

Session G. TUR Project Management Workshop
We all want our TUR projects to be planned and implemented on time, under budget, and supporting the mission of our organizations. This workshop is designed to help you understand and adopt key concepts and tools in project management with the emphasis on the role that good communications play in project management. Recommended for new TUR Planners.

Session H. Green Materials II: Supply Chain Management
The second of two sessions devoted to green materials will delve into the challenges of managing materials content in a world where supply chains are becoming increasingly deep and complex. We will hear from representatives of the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council (GC3), which was formed to support green chemistry and design for the environment by fostering dialog and collaboration across supply chains.

Session I. Energy Conservation: Ventilation and Compressed Air
In this session you will hear about useful free software for auditing the energy used by your compressed air system, plus a review of ventilation from industrial processes and a case study of energy conservation. This workshop qualifies toward the remaining 6 credits of the initial RC certification or for credits to maintain continuing education recertification.

Registration Deadline:
The registration deadline is April 4, 2012. Seating is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first come/first served basis. We will confirm session selections with your conference confirmation. Attendance will be tracked to ensure that planners receive a certificate of completion for sessions attended.

Fees:
The registration fee includes conference materials, a continental breakfast, lunch, and breaks. The full-day fee for TURA filers is $200.00, the fee for nonfilers is $250.00, and the half-day fee is $125.00. Fees include lunch. Make checks payable to UMass Lowell. Checks may be mailed or brought to the conference.

Cancellations:
Cancellations must be received by April 4, 2012. Cancellations by this date will receive a credit for the registration that may be used for a future training. There will be no credit given for cancellations after April 4, 2012. Fax or mail cancellations to the number or address above.
