Auto Maintenance and Repair

Auto shop workers
TURI grants helped the Safe Shops Project demonstrate the use of safer brake cleaners

TURI is currently recruiting auto repair and body shops in several cities to participate in a program that includes a free three-month trial of safer brake cleaning products or paint gun washing systems, a before and after air monitoring study and technical support. Contact Joy Onasch, 978-934-4343, if your shop is located in one of the following cities - Lowell, Springfield, Holyoke, Fall River and New Bedford. Read the press release.

Auto shops are an important part of a community, providing needed services and jobs. However, they also use many substances that pose a hazard to their workers and can potentially pollute the environment.

TURI helps auto shops to reduce their use of toxic chemicals and to implement pollution prevention measures.

Recent TURI grants have supported auto shop owners who want to switch to safer alternatives for toxic brake cleaners and solvents, and to implement best practices for worker safety and health.

Projects related to solvent use and lead reduction in auto shops
By switching to safer products, it's better for the health of both my clients and workers. Our air quality has improved and I'm also saving money by using less solvent to wash the paint guns.
