Washing Soda Chemical names: Sodium carbonate
Inhalation: Inhalation of dusts may cause irritation to the nose, throat and lungs. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention.
Ingestion: Slightly toxic. Ingestion may cause abdominal discomfort and irritation of the oral and alimentary mucosa. Ingestion may also present a potential aspiration hazard. Get medical attention if symptoms appear.
Skin Contact: Various severities of irritation are possible upon prolonged, repeated or occluded contact. In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water. Cover the irritated skin with an emollient.
Eye Contact: Severe irritant. Potential for burns and injury if not treated immediately. Check for and remove contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with clean flowing water, low pressure and lukewarm if possible, occasionally lifting upper and lower eyelids. Get medical attention immediately.
Chronic Exposure: May be toxic to upper respiratory tract, skin, eyes
Acute Effects: No data
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions: No data

What does this mean?

Sodium carbonate (washing soda) can be toxic to the upper respiratory tract, skin and/or eyes if long term exposures occur. Avoid inhaling washing soda dust when using, and avoid getting it into your eyes or on your skin. If exposed, flush the exposed area with large quantities of water.
