Is It Green
Finding and adopting safer alternatives to toxic chemicals is a core aspect of toxics use reduction. An alternatives assessment looks comprehensively at the uses of chemicals of concern, and the availability of safer, technically feasible and affordable alternatives. These alternatives may be chemical substitutions, but may also be modifications to processes or product redesign that facilitates the shift to safer processes and products.
As part of the TURI Lab’s effort to promote safer, “greener” cleaning products, the Lab provides manufacturers, end-users and community group with access to performance testing via its on-line database of testing results, CleanerSolutions. The TURI Lab also provides process specific training and product formulation assistance to ensure the selection of safer ingredients without sacrificing performance.
More specifically, the Lab encourages the use of safer surfactants through its connections to EPA's Design for the Environment and the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative. We have been recognized by EPA as a Champion of the SDSI program. We are constantly reviewing the latest surfactants listed in the CleanGredients database and our testing database is listed as tool for performance testing on their site.
