Under the Toxics Use Reduction Act, about 600 companies in Massachusetts must report annually on toxic chemicals used and toxic byproducts generated. This information has been collected for the past 20 years and resides in a database called "TURAData".
Each year as facility managers prepare to report toxic chemicals released to the environment or transferred off-sited under the federal Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), they must also report on the use of those chemicals under the Massachusetts TURA program. Companies are required to report if they meet the following criteria:
- Have ten or more full-time employees on staff
- Conduct business activities according to certain Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes
- Either manufacture or process 25,000 pounds or more of a reportable toxic substance during the reporting year or otherwise use 10,000 pounds or more of a reportable toxic substance during the reporting year.
