For Businesses and Industry
Skills and knowledge that build efficiency, address compliance and foster a competitive edge
Our conferences and work groups address specific technologies and management for successful change.
Efficiency through deep planning and control
Toxics Use Reduction (TUR) Planning is a fundamental form of pollution prevention that focuses on industrial activities to promote safer and cleaner production and to enhance economic viability. Planning techniques are successful at reducing use of expensive and risky materials, and at reducing energy and water use. To create a TUR plan, companies must have a policy that encourages TUR, create planning teams, analyze production processes, conduct materials accounting and cost identification programs, audit health and environmental regulations, and identify good options.
The best way to achieve compliance is to stop using regulated substances, while sustaining production goals of speed and quality.
The chemicals policies of other US states and of other countries affect Massachusetts businesses. TURI monitors those policies, participates in national and international policy discussions, and provides training to inform industry of recent and upcoming developments in global chemicals policy.
Major European regulations that we monitor:
- End of Life Vehicle Directive (ELV)
- WEEE and RoHS (the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and the Restrictions on Hazardous Substances) Directives
- Dangerous Substances (Restrictions on the Marketing and Use of Certain Dangerous Substances and Preparations) Directive
- Toxics in Products Discussions at the United Nations Environment Program
Save money, design for sustainability and anticipate markets
Companies have saved money making changes targeted in Toxics Use Reduction and Resource Efficiency programs.
Also, by knowing what initiatives are emerging that raise concerns about using specific chemicals, formulators and product designers can include cost and potential alternatives discovery in their research. In this way, safer products are brought to the market ahead of competition, and a solid record of environmental and safety performance builds your reputation.
