Chemical Look-Up
It is easy to find out about pesticides by using the Internet. To get accurate information you need to know the name of the active ingredients in the product. Here's how to do that.
- If a product contains pesticides, it will have an EPA registration number and the active ingredient will be listed on the label.
- If you do not have access to the label, ask for the exact product name and manufacturer. Pesticide applicators are required by law to provide this information on a contract before applying any material.
- With the product name you can look up the active ingredients by using the Pesticide Action Network database www.pesticideinfo.org/Index.html, or you can search for the product with www.Google.com.
Once you have the name(s) of the active ingredient(s), you can look up health and environmental effects at the following sites:
- Cornell Pesticide Information Profiles http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/index.html
- Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides Consumer Fact Sheets http://www.pesticide.org/factsheets.html#pesticides
- National Institutes for Health Peer Reviewed Research Articles http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/
