Municipal Operations

Municipalities have tremendous ability to affect the environment and public health through their practices and policies. Beginning with their own practices, they can purchase environmentally preferable products such as cleaning products from the State's Environmentally Preferable Procurement Contract. Municipalities can promote the use of safer and more sustainable green building materials for renovated or newly constructed schools and town buildings. For town land care, They can promote alternatives to traditional pesticide use by developing an Organic or Integrated Pest Management Policy and using only Organic or IPM contract services.

Municipalities can also work with households, small businesses and Local industry to promote the reduction of toxics in their community. Displayed on this site are local government toxics use reduction model projects and materials developed through the Institute's Toxics Use Reduction Networking (TURN) Grant Program. Be sure to see our Schools Sector for projects specific to schools and our Model Policies section on the homepage.
