Toxics Use Reduction (TUR) is about protecting workers, communities and the environment, while promoting competitiveness, through efficient materials use and management. The key to effective, long-term TUR is good planning.

This course focuses in-depth on TUR planning. It presents a systematic approach to identify waste and inefficiencies, compare and implement opportunities to reduce toxics, and continually improve a TUR program. The course will also present detailed information about how to modify and certify an existing TUR plan.

After this course, you will be able to:
  • Take the DEP TUR Planner Certification exam
  • Develop results-focused goals and objectives for reducing toxics
  • Assemble teams to leverage diverse expertise within the facility
  • Enlist upper management support
  • Perform process characterizations of facility operations
  • Identify and prioritize waste reduction opportunities
  • Perform technical and economic evaluations of TUR options

TUR Practical Application Days

On October 31, 2002, the Toxics Use Reduction Institute is offering a continuing education opportunity for TUR Planners during the final day of the upcoming TUR Planner Course. This training is jointly sponsored and DEP has approved this event for double credit, making each half day worth six credits. Attendance at a full day will be worth 12 credits. These credits may be used to apply to DEP for recertification. You may attend the morning session and/or one of the afternoon sessions.

MORNING SESSION, 9:00-12:00 Perspectives on the Role of a TUR Planner (One session)
This single session will present challenges, pitfalls, and opportunities faced by TUR Planners from three different planner perspectives: (a) DEP What does DEP look for during an inspection of a TUR Plan? (b) Consultant What pitfalls does an outside consultant face when hired by a company to complete a plan or a plan update? (c) Industry Where do you find the information you need to update or develop a TUR Plan?

AFTERNOON SESSION, 1:00-4:00 Practical Applications in TUR (Choose one of two)
(1) Convincing the Unconvinceable Learn tools and methods to promote corporate culture changes associated with implementing TUR practices.
(2) Developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) from a TUR Framework Learn how the TUR planning model can be modified and enhanced to develop a lasting EMS, and what the advantages and benefits are for doing so.
