Speakers: Pam Civie, Manager, Industry EMS Peer Mentoring Work Group program, TURI
Madeline Snow, Lead Trainer, EMS Service Program, University of Massachusetts Lowell
This full day session will present you with fundamental information about Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Throughout the
day you will hear from experts in EMS, do activities to try your own hand at developing an EMS, and gain insight into how EMS implementation
has worked out for your industry peers. This conference track is designed for TUR Planners who have little or no experience
with EMS but are interested in exploring the possibilities at their companies or with their clients. As a result of participating in this workshop,
you will improve your own literacy about EMS, learn the business advantages of implementing an EMS, and have the motivation
and knowledge to begin the process at your facility.

B: Chemical Management Services

Speakers: Frank Marino, Corporate EH&S, Raytheon Company;Larry Holcombe, CMS supplier Haas;Thilanka Dissonayake, Technical/EH&S, Metal finishing supplier CIL, Inc.
This session will provide 3 perspectives on the rapidly expanding chemical management services (CMS) business. CMS is a unique business
model that provides central chemical management of end user’s chemicals at hubs that are established strategically to serve a particular
geographic region. Just-in-time supplying by incentivized suppliers making chemical use efficiency recommendations have transformed the
CMS supplier from the traditional role of chemical supplier, to one of a truly integrated business partner that helps their customer base use
chemicals more efficiently. The chemical end user also benefits from services provided by the CMS supplier in the areas of MSDS management,
incoming inspection, chemical warehousing, regulatory reporting and more.

C: Greener Technology Development Efforts at OTA

Speakers: Augustus Ogunbameru, Sc.D., Team Leader, Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance for TUR; John Raschko, Ph.D., Team Leader, Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance for TUR
Two case studies describing ongoing projects at the Office of Technical Assistance will be presented. The first, the Color Removal Project,
involves OTA’s collaborative research effort with the Institute for Green Chemistry at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Advanced
Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC) and University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth Textile Department (UMass D) to remove
colors from wastewater effluents of textile and paper mills. The second is the Churchill Coatings Project, a case study of how one company
was facing a clear limit to its vitality in the state and how a unique enforcement resolution was formed that would address regulatory compliance
through a collaborative project to accelerate greener technology development in the form of low-VOC wood coatings.

D: Continuation o f Session A: Is an EMS the Way to go in Your Company?
This is a full day session. Both sessions are requires for credit

E: WHAT’S NEW (AND WHAT’S NOT): The Federal Biobased Program and the Results of Alternatives Assessment at

TURI’s Laboratory
Speaker: Carol LeBlanc, Director, Surface Solutions Laboratory, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
This talk will provide an overview of the Federal Biobased Products Preferred Procurement Program (FB4P) which was established by the
U.S. Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002. This act established a requirement on the agencies of the federal government to give
preference to biobased products. The presentation will also include the results of the Surface Solutions Laboratory’s work in implementing
solvent substitution in Massachusetts industries. The programs’ differences and similarities will be discussed, and participants will have
a chance to voice their opinions and suggestions. And…
OUT OF CONTROL: A Tool for Solvent Substitution in Surface Cleaning
Speaker: Jason Marshall, Manager of Laboratory Testing, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
The Surface Solutions Laboratory has collected data over its many years of testing the performances of industrial cleaning products.
The resulting information has been incorporated into a database system allowing for quick and easy access. This tool is used
for identifying effective environmental cleaning substitutes, resulting in the reduction of toxic chemicals used in surface cleaning
making compliance with regulations easier. This session will present the methodology for selecting a product based on performance
as well as safety. Computers will be available to allow participants will use the on-line database to find products that could
be used as alternatives in their own manufacturing process.

F: Sustainability Reporting and TUR Planning

Speakers: Janet Clark, Associate Director, TURI; Vesela Veleva, Social Research Analyst ,Citizens Advisers Inc.;Steve Sears VP Mnf, Engineering, Raw Materials and Environment, Crane Paper Company; Rose Perkins, Manager of Sustainable Development, Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials; and George Zanni,  Environmental Health and Safety, Madico.
There has been a significant increase in sustainability reporting, which are voluntary public statements of a company’s environmental
and social performance. Companies are doing this for proof of good governance to stockholders, who are increasingly
socially responsible investors (SRI). Companies are also doing sustainability reporting to achieve preferred trading partner status,
and to improve their relationship with regulators and neighbors. Whether your company is doing a sustainability report or not,
TUR performance and an ability to do planning and TUR performance reporting under TURA places Massachusetts companies
in the forefront of a key piece of sustainability. This session will explore the opportunities for TURA companies to build on this
advantage, and consider opportunities to lead in an area of increasing challenge to those companies less experienced in TUR.

Purpose: This event is specially designed for the certified Toxics Reduction Planner seeking to earn credits toward the continuing education requirement for certification. The conference will provide opportunities to learn from presentation and other TUR Planner successes and challenges. The Conference is also open to others interested in the issues of toxics research pollution prevention and cleaner production.
Credit: Each half day of training at this conference is worth three (3) professional continuing education credits. Because this is a jointly sponsored TURA event, DEP has approved this event for double credit making each half day worth six credits. Attendance for a full day would be worth 12 credits. These credits may be used to apply to DEP for certification. Pre-registration and pre-selection of workshops is required.
