RoHS Compliance Demo Site - Vicor, Andover, MA

The Demonstration Site events will combine presentations by key company personnel with tours of pertinent process areas and quality assurance laboratories.


The Demonstration Site Program will feature topics such as:

  • The roles of quality, R&D, process engineering, marketing and customer service in the RoHS compliance process;
  • Alternative technologies to tin-lead solder, hexavalent chromium coatings, printed wire board finishes, and cadmium pigments in plastic components;
  • Test methodologies to ensure that RoHS compliant products adhere to high quality and reliability standards;
  • Global supply chain and inventory management;
  • Process changes and equipment modifications;
  • Marketing and communications with customers;
  • Creating new business systems for parts labeling and numbering;
  • Strategies for supporting aerospace and military customer specifications that restrict the use of RoHS compliant materials;
  • The potential impact of the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive on US manufacturers.


Vicor Corporation


Vicor Corporation, a medium-sized manufacturer of power conversion components with a commitment to manufacture in the US, will complete the transition of its entire product line to RoHS compliant products by May 2006. This Demonstration Site event will highlight several material and process changes, including tin-silver-copper solder, leadfree printed wire board finishes and chrome-free plating of aluminum parts. Vicor’s multi-functional project team will share its strategies for:

  • mitigating tin whiskers on lead-free finishes;
  • achieving RoHS compliance without additional costs to the company;
  • minimizing inventory losses during its transition to RoHS compliant products;
  • continuing to support aerospace and military customer specifications;
  • ensuring that customer needs are met; and
  • sharing its expertise to build a regional supply chain for chrome-free plating.
