B: Pick One: How to Select an Alternative Cleaning Product
Jason Marshall, Manager of Laboratory Testing, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
The Surface Solutions Laboratory has collected data over its many years of testing the performances of industrial cleaning products. The resulting information has been incorporated into a database system allowing for quick and easy access. This tool is used for identifying effective environmental cleaning substitutes, resulting in the reduction of toxic chemicals used in surface cleaning making compliance with regulations easier. This session will present the latest updates and new additions to the methodology for selecting a product based on performance as well as safety.

Rachel Massey, Policy Analyst, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
This session will offer an overview of important new developments in chemicals policy at the international and domestic levels. D: Improving Chemical Plant Security via Greener Process Technologies
Scott Butner, Senior Research Scientist, Knowledge Transformation and Integration Group, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
In the aftermath of the terrorist events of 9/11/2001, many decision makers in government and industry became acutely aware of the risks that our modern technological society presents. Probably no industry was more impacted than the chemical manufacturing industry, which is responsible for the handling and processing of thousands of toxic, flammable, and explosive materials. This presentation will present an overview of the plant security issue from the perspective of the chemical manufacturing industry, and describe current efforts within the industry, government, and the NGO community to minimize the threat of terrorist attack by addressing chemical and process risk. New trends in process technology which can minimize these risks (e.g., process intensification, microscale chemical processing, and green chemistry) will also be discussed in the context of how the plant security and pollution prevention drivers can be leveraged to spur adoption of these technologies.
E: Alternative Resource Conservation Planning
Liz Harriman, Deputy Director, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
Ed Gomes, EHS Manager, Vicor Corporation
This session will provide an overview of the new resource conservation planning options under the TURA 2006 Amendments. Learn how to apply the tools and methods of TUR Planning to energy, water, and non-reportable materials
F: The TURA Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Alternative
Pam Civie, Industry Research Program Manager, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
Janet Clark, Senior Associate Director, Toxics Use Reduction Institute
In this session we will present an overview of the specific requirements currently being considered for companies interested in using a TURA EMS in lieu of their TUR Plans. The session will include a presentation by Teradyne’s Corporate EH&S Engineer, Debra Pulpi. This presentation will describe the challenges, benefits and methods that Teradyne, an EPA Performance Track company, is considering as it decides how best to modify its existing ISO 14001-certified EMS. Participants will work in small groups to evaluate whether a mock EMS adequately addresses the specific requirements of the TURA EMS. We will end with a discussion of what has been learned as well as exploration of specific participant situations and their influence on whether or not to use the TURA EMS.
