• implement water management technologies and applications
• improve your competitive edge
• improve your environmental performance and,
• increase your bottom line

Cam Metcalf, Director, The Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center (KPPC)

B: Design for the Environment – Solar Photovoltaics Case Study

Product design should include an evaluation of a market need, the ability of the product to meet that need, the availability of resources to produce the product, regulations that may affect the product, and the risks involved in manufacturing a product, during consumer use, and at end of product life. Many of these criteria are incorporated in common business models, but in today’s marketplace there is more focus on the long and short-term risks of product components. Using solar photovoltaics as a model, we will look at Design for the Environment principles and processes, and how they affect business decisions for products that incorporate toxic materials.

Concurrent Afternoon Sessions from 1:15 PM to 4:15 PM - Choose One

C: Nano Risk Management Training Workshop

Nanotechnology presents great opportunities, but also potential risks that deserve special consideration. This interactive workshop will train participants in the details of implementing nano-specific risk management in their own operations. This workshop will give participants the tools they need to:

  • Understand (and explain to others) why a nano-specific risk management is necessary;
  • Assemble and leverage the internal and external resources they will need to implement nano-specific risk management, and
  • Begin implementing nano-specific risk management in their own processes in an efficient and effective manner. The workshop will be led by one of the primary authors of the Nano Risk Framework, and will include interactive discussions of how to implement nano-specific risk management, case studies of how the Framework is already being used by companies and governments, and sources of additional help for companies adopting these approaches.

Scott Walsh, Project Manager, Corporate Partnerships Environmental Defense Fund

D: Academic Research for Industry TUR

This session will discuss TURI’s 15 years of experience with research projects conducted by UMass faculty. The research has addressed a variety of industry TUR needs as well as provided insight into the impact of TUR planning on the Massachusetts environment, work force and economy. Summaries of current research on-going at UMass Lowell will be presented by the researchers themselves. These research projects include the following topics:

  • Identifying Targets for Reducing Exposure to Agents that Cause or Exacerbate Asthma in Massachusetts
  • Greener Routes to Halogen-Free Flame Retardants
  • Nanoscale Lead-Free Solders (“Nano-Solders”): Synthesis, Characterization and Reflow Properties

Participants in this session will learn about the kinds of research that they can take advantage of by partnering with TURA program agencies and the wealth of knowledge available in the UMass system. Your thoughts on future research topics of interest to your industry sector, to Massachusetts as a whole, and related to the continual improvement of the university research program under TURA will be gathered through small group exercises.
