Keynote Address from 8:30AM to 9:30 AM - Art Fong – Corporate Environmental Affairs, IBM Corporation - “TUR = Environmental Leadership and Smart Business”
IBM has long been a leader among major global corporations in establishing sustainability policies, including managing and reducing the use of toxics throughout its supply chain. Art Fong, who heads IBM’s toxicology and chemical management efforts, will speak on the value of vigorous toxics reduction efforts, and their positive impact on traditional business goals.

Concurrent Morning Sessions from 9:45 AM to 12:15 PM - Choose One

Session A: Water Conservation
Water conservation is often overlooked as a significant opportunity to reduce operating costs and ecological impact. Amy Vickers, author of the Handbook of Water Use and Conservation and an internationally recognized authority on water conservation, will conduct this workshop session. She will present steps for successful water use audits and conservation programs, numerous case studies, and practical exercises to reinforce important concepts. Qualifies for 3 RC-Water Conservation CE credits

Session B: Stick to the Safer Stuff!
This session will focus on the applications, functions and chemical constituents of adhesives and epoxies. We’ll hear from Massachusetts manufacturers about industrial and consumer product applications of adhesive formulations, and about innovations designed to create a suite of safer adhesives and epoxies. We’ll also learn about the efforts of an end user, New Balance, to move towards manufacture of its products using only water-based adhesives, and about similar efforts throughout the apparel and footwear industry. Finally, we’ll hear about research into new adhesive and epoxy formulations that have the potential to revolutionize these products.

Session C: Integrated Planning for Hazard Analysis and Prevention, Safety, Quality, and TUR
Safety programs, energy planning, quality management, and TUR are all concerned with the use of chemicals that cause risks, as well as opportunities for reducing costs and liabilities. It is far more efficient to address these efforts in an integrated manner than to perform them individually, without a comprehensive perspective. This workshop will present case studies and exercises for plans that combine all these aspects. Participants should already be familiar with the new Massachusetts Process Safety Regulation, 527 CMR 33.

Afternoon Plenary 1:00 PM to 1:20 PM – TURA Program Update - Required

News and updates of interest to all TUR Planners - from MassDEP, OTA, TURI and the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund program.

Concurrent Afternoon Sessions from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM – Choose One

Session D. Energy Auditing and Conservation for SMEs
This workshop on energy conservation will feature a detailed case study of a garment cleaner who reduced energy use and cost through process modernization, boiler and heating system upgrades, and numerous other measures. We will follow this with a framework for conducting a Level 1 energy audit and benchmark analysis appropriate for Small-to-Medium sized Enterprises. Qualifies for 3 RC Energy Conservation CE credits

Session E. TUR Plans - Doing Them Right. Doing Them Well.
Based on a review of selected plans from individual TURA filers, MassDEP has identified a number of commonly-occurring problems in the plans. This session will include a brief overview of MassDEP’s findings; an exercise to practice reviewing and correcting problems in a plan; and a discussion of selected plan elements.

Session F: The Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Communication - THIS SESSION IS NOW CLOSED!!!!
The new OSHA Hazard Communication Standard is now aligned with the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS will establish a consistent international system of labeling, and provide more information on chemical safety, which will help improve your TUR efforts. This workshop will prepare you for the transition to the new system, and assist you with materials to deliver employee training in time for the Dec. 1, 2013 deadline.
