A: Emerging Chemicals and Materials Policies and Practices
The Institute will be joined by the UMass Lowell Center for Green Chemistry in discussing emerging chemicals policies in the European Union (known as REACH) and how these and other policies become drivers for innovative ways to approach the chemicals and materials development choices of industry. Amy Cannon and Roger Boggs from the CGC will present on current research that has direct applicability to Massachusetts industry. We’ll also work with participants in identifying their ideal research and technology needs and activities for the future.

B: Environmental and Occupational Health Impacts of Nanoparticles
The purpose of this workshop is to present the most recent information on the environmental and occupational health and safety impact of nanoparticles. Recent research on toxicology, inhalation exposures, dermal exposures, life cycle assessment, and control technologies will be presented.

C: Out of Control: A Tool for Solvent Substitution in Surface Cleaning
The Surface Solutions Laboratory has collected data over its many years of testing the performances of industrial cleaning products. The resulting information has been incorporated into a database system allowing for quick and easy access. This tool is used for identifying effective environmental cleaning substitutes, resulting in the reduction of toxic chemicals used in surface cleaning making compliance with regulations easier. This session will present the methodology for selecting a product based on performance as well as safety. Computers will be available to allow participants to use the on-line database to find products that could be used as alternatives in their own manufacturing process

Afternoon Sessions

D: Toxics Release Inventory (TRI): Current, 2007 and Future Reporting
A brief overview of 2005 TRI reporting, proposed changes for 2007 and future changes in reporting frequency will be addressed. Data quality and complete and accurate reporting of persistent, bioaccumulative toxics (PBTs) will be discussed. Electronic reporting via the Internet using 2005TRI-ME software will be demonstrated. Self disclosing under EPA’s Audit and Small Business Policies will be reviewed. Time will be given for TRI Qs&As.

E: Five Chemical Alternative Assessment Study
Last fall, the Commonwealth of Mass. requested that TURI assess the technical, economic and EH&S feasibility of adopting alternatives to 5 chemicals: Lead, Formaldehyde, Perchloroethylene, Hexavalent chromium, and di- (2 ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP). One of the challenging aspects of this project is how to summarize the results in a meaningful way for a diverse audience. This interactive session, lead by TURI staff, will describe the methodology and provide an opportunity for planners to become involved in designing the presentation of results.

F: New Tools for TUR Planners
This session provides an introduction to two new tools for planners. Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) is becoming an essential part of management decision-makingand both internal and external reporting. With benefits such as cost-effective compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, and evaluation and implementation of effective and environmentally sensitive programs, the use of EMA is becoming more common throughout the world. This session will focus on the use of new international accounting guidelines as a tool that TUR planners can use to better communicate with company accounting staff.

The second half of the session will provide an introduction to sustainability self-assessment tools. Conducting a sustainability self-assessment is an excellent first step in strengthening your company’s commitment to sustainable business practices. The self-assessment process not only identifies where a company’s strengths and weaknesses lie, it also reveals linkages between social and environmental responsibility and economic performance and competitiveness.
