Process characterization is required for toxics use
reduction planning. It yields diagrams and insight into a production or service
process. To begin, a materials accounting is undertaken to assess the amount of
by-product or waste versus the amounts of toxic used. Then the process is
mapped, using a diagram as a visual representation of critical production units
that shows where chemicals enter and leave the process.
