Biotechnology
Biotechnology companies TURI has worked with to improve environmental management systems include:
- Millipore Corporation
- Genzyme
- Avecia Biotechnology
- Abbott Laboratories/MediSense Products
- Applied Biosystems
The TURI Laboratory is researching bio-based products in the search for greener alternative materials. For example, the Laboratory was recently involved in performance testing of a Cambridge, Massachusetts biotech firm's proprietary product. Originally intended for other purposes, the company is hoping to expand this product's market to cleaning applications. The federal government is especially interested in the use of bio-based products for non-agricultural uses. This is because a great deal of information is already available on the environmental fate of these substances. Often soy- or corn-based, these formulations have surfactant properties that are in process development.
The healthcare community -- with broad and specific cleaning and disinfection activities -- is interested in TURI's research and development program due to such issues as multiple chemical sensitivity, endocrine disruption and asthma.
