Green Chemistry

Green chemistry is a science-based approach for achieving strong and healthy economies that are respectful of environmental qualities. It involves a set of principles for reducing or eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture or application of chemical products. For a technology to be green, it must:

  • be more environmentally benign than alternatives;
  • be more economically viable than alternatives; and
  • functionally outperform the alternatives

A technology that is missing any of these three characteristics will not be successful in the marketplace. And, a technology that is not put into practice does not accomplish the goals of pollution prevention. The Institute works closely with the Center for Green Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and actively encourages and funds faculty to conduct research into sustainable technologies that utilize Green chemistry.
