Trichloroethylene (TCE) Reduction Resources

On January 3, 2008, the Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary announced strict new reporting thresholds for certain hazardous industrial chemicals, the first being trichloroethylene.

Companies that use at least 1,000 pounds of these chemicals annually must now

  • report their use to the Department of Environmental Protection,
  • pay fees
  • prepare toxics use reduction plans

Alternative Cleaning Testing

The TURI Lab has worked on many projects attempting to replace TCE in cleaning applications.

Many of these project results can be found in the lab's databse of testing results, www.cleanersolutions.org.

Search using the Replace a Solvent option and select trichloroethylene as the solvent to replace or follow this link (leaves TURI's website to the lab's database of testing):

Grants Received

In addition, the lab has received grants from the EPA to work specifically on identifying and assisting users of TCE in cleaning operations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Read more on each project.
