Communications and Social Media Specialist

TURI is seeking a creative, quick-on-their-feet specialist to help us in sharing the story of our groundbreaking work to protect human health and the environment. The person holding this position will have the opportunity to think creatively, helping TURI reimagine our online presence, both through our web site (www.turi.org) and our various social media outlets.

This position will work with key staff to identify and craft specific information about work in a compelling and inviting way, which appeals to a variety of audiences, including businesses both small and large, the general public, advocacy organizations and scientific/technical researchers.

The successful candidate will contribute significantly as we develop clear social media and outreach strategies in alignment with our strategic five-year plan. The position is part-time, non-benefited, 20 to 25 hours per week, for a period of at least six months. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Develop and expand TURI’s social media presence
  • Improve TURI’s website, including use of web analytics tools
  • Tell the story of TURI and why our work matters
  • Help develop engaging content, including brochures, videos, images and reports

Job Details:

  • Broadcast the story of the work of the Institute:
    • Work with TURI staff to identify and understand our various target audiences and what they care about with respect to recent projects that promote toxics use reduction successes.
    • Craft compelling posts for various social media sites (Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook).
    • Investigate innovative techniques for creating posts to be most interesting/attractive to various audiences, including: the general public; professionals in related fields including, but not limited to, sustainability, conservation, health and safety and chemicals policies, and environmental, consumer product, worker safety and rights advocates.
    • Respond to immediately relevant news items and developments either within the Institute, in Massachusetts or globally with appropriate and timely posts.
    • Create graphics in Canva to amplify messages in social media.
  • Assist in maintaining our website:
    • Adjust content as needed and directed by the communications team.
    • Use information from web analytics to help prioritize social media posts and make recommendations about TURI’s website to make it more engaging and useful to users.
    • Research additional format and navigation changes that would improve usability of the website.
  • Provide outreach material design and content:
    • Contribute to outreach material drafting.
    • Develop a library of TURI-specific images that can be used in outreach materials and social media posts.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education and experience:

  • HS diploma or GED/equivalent
  • Candidates must have at least 3 years of directly related experience; college-level education can substitute for up to 2 years of experience.

Skills:

  • Strong written communication skills
  • Creativity and innovative thinking
  • Demonstrated experience crafting innovative social media for scientific content
  • Familiarity with a variety of digital platforms and capabilities
  • Clear communicator to both technical and lay audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on project teams

Additional Considerations (desired but not required):

  • Experience working with environmental and/or occupational health focused organizations, whether on communications and/or social media or otherwise
  • A degree or coursework in digital communications, graphic design, advertising, marketing, or a related field
  • Graphic design skills
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite software, in particular Photoshop and InDesign
