Fall Toxics Use Reduction Virtual Conference

MassDEP has approved this event for double credits.  Attending all four sessions provides 12 TUR Planner continuing education credits.  Planners may use these credits to apply to MassDEP for recertification.

November 10, 2022 (Thursday) - 9:00-10:30 AM

Session A: Fundamentals: Process Characterization 

Excellent process characterization sets the foundation for a thorough and innovative toxics use reduction plan. We'll start with a refresher on the requirements for process characterization associated with TUR planning and will then hear from a veteran TUR planner about her experience and tips for gathering the information necessary to fully understand process(es) using toxic chemicals at a facility.

Session B: Achieving TUR Success: Company Examples  

Companies in Massachusetts continue to find new opportunities to reduce their use of toxic chemicals. Hear from several industry representatives about their experience implementing toxics use reduction techniques and the lessons learned. We’ll also learn more about how to work with the TURA program to identify or develop safer solutions to meet your functional requirements.

Session C: Understanding Chemical Hazards: Going Beyond Your SDS   

Sustainable companies carefully vet their choices to minimize potential worker or environmental exposure to toxic chemicals. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) provided by chemical and product suppliers alert users of known hazards, but often don't provide a complete picture. This session will include a brief refresher on the SDS and will provide ample discussion and practice using other hazard information resources when comparing options.

Session D:  Climate Resiliency and Chemicals Management

The impacts of climate change and extreme weather events along with critical infrastructure failure can pose safety and public health risks to workers and communities surrounding facilities that use or store toxic chemicals. Toxics use reduction techniques can be used as a strategy to enhance chemical safety and climate change resiliency. This session will include a case study, breakout group activities, and large group discussion to demonstrate how companies can incorporate chemical safety and climate change resiliency into their preparedness planning and operations.

Cancellations must be received 5 days before sessions. Cancellations by this date will receive a credit for the registration that may be used for a future training.  There will be no credit given for cancellations received less than 5 days prior to session(s).
