Concurrent Morning Sessions - 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Choose One

A: Chemistry 101, Wastewater 101
This basic chemistry review will cover the principles and fundamentals of chemistry necessary to complete the reporting and planning requirements of the TUR Act. The chemistry module will be followed by an explanation of the fundamental technologies of wastewater treatment and their application.

B: Green Jobs: Scope and Opportunities

What do policymakers mean when they support "Green Jobs", and are there opportunities for TUR Planners? Attenders will hear about emerging Massachusetts policy from senior representatives of the legislature and administration, and have a chance to offer suggestions. To consider opportunities in the greening of technology, we will also hear from the authors of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production's report "Clean Tech: An Agenda for a Healthy Economy". Also speaking will be innovators from industry to offer some specific technological perspectives. The session will finish with a "cafe" or small group discussion involving the experts in the audience.

C: Site visit to Bristol Myers Squibb - CLOSED
This site visit will include a description of BMS experiences during the building of its new facility at Devens. Staff from BMS will introduce the facility, followed by a site visit, concluding with a debriefing. Participants will be required to glean information from the plant tour, and to complete an exercise upon their return to the classroom. This site visit will be limited in size and will be on a first come/first served basis.

If you are interested in learning more about the innovative solutions Bristol-Myers Squibb has implemented to address several technical and regulatory challenges associated with the use of water in the construction of their new facility at Devens, but are not able to attend the session at this year's Spring Continuing Education Conference, you have two other opportunities to do so: Thursday, May 21 from 9 to noon, and Tuesday, June 2 also from 9 to noon. Go to the TURI website to get more information about these demonstration site events and to register.

Concurrent Afternoon Sessions - 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Choose One

D: Resource Conservation
This session will explore water and energy conservation. Keith Lane from DuBois Chemicals, and Mary Ellen Mika from Steelcase will discuss how energy and water conservation go hand in hand, and in some cases, can also lead to toxics use reduction.

OTA will briefly discuss energy efficiency and renewables and lead a short discussion exploring barriers to the implementation of such projects. This will be followed by presentations from companies with which OTA has worked, including a description of energy and water conservation as well as CO2 substitution for sulfuric acid at Cranston, and heat exchange and solar panel installation at Delaware Valley Corporation.

E: REACH and Beyond: New Developments in Chemicals Policy
This session will provide information on new developments in chemicals policy within and outside the US. The session will include a detailed discussion of REACH implementation, including opportunities and challenges; a brief update on the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS); and an overview of new developments in chemicals policy at the state level in the US.
