Columbia, a manufacturer of school furniture, installed a new zero wastewater discharge plating line that recovers and reuses 98 percent of the nickel and chromic acid from rinse waters. This improvement also reduced use of chromium trioxide by more than 31,000 pounds per year. By upgrading the plating equipment and integrating a zero discharge wastewater treatment system, the company also eliminated the use of 150,000 gallons of water per day saving $80,000 per year in sewer fees.
