Road paint manufacturer Franklin Paint has eliminated use of xylene and methanol and reduced reliance on four other chemicals to below reporting thresholds while increasing its paint production. By finding safer materials and reformulating products, the company has reduced its chemical use by more than 100,000 pounds of lead, 100,000 pounds of chromium compounds and 500,000 pounds of toluene annually. Adoption of safer substitutes has made it possible for the company to promote its products as a safer alternative when compared to its competitors, receiving positive responses from customers.
