Aerospace and Defense Consortium Finds Safer Alternatives to Hexavalent Chromium

TURI manages a consortium of leading companies in the aerospace and defense industry to find safer alternatives to hexavalent chromium. This higher hazardous substance is used in bond primers, sealants and conversion coatings. The workgroup has tested the performance of safer substances with positive results for bond primers and sealants and is now working on conversion coatings.

High Hazards Substances Used in the Industry

The aerospace and defense industries represent major customers of many Massachusetts manufacturers. The critical needs of these industries demand a high level of control over the manufacture of products used.

The TURA program has designated several chemicals commonly found in military and industry specifications as high hazard substances, including lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and trichloroethylene. TURI is working with Massachusetts companies throughout this supply chain to address performance requirements associated with specifications that mention these and other chemicals with a goal of moving towards safer alternatives.
