Jackson Cleaners in Melrose has switched from using perc to professional steam cleaning technology, a safer alternative that uses special detergents and a computer controlled cleaning unit.
Owner Thanh Dinh is the first in the U.S. to switch from perc to steam cleaning. He says that the steam cleaning machine produces high quality results at less cost than using the perc machine.
To document the savings, he is in the process of collecting data. TURI will then publish this information for other dry cleaners to evaluate.
Jackson Cleaners selected a Union Cloud steam cleaning machine. It uses about one gallon of water to generate steam for the cleaning process and 14 gallons for cooling the equipment during the cleaning and drying process. Detergent and steam combine and then coat the garments with a mist and steam and then flushes the detergent, water and dirt from the clothes.
