Ozone Sterilization

Dr. Seongkyu Yoon and his chemical engineering research assistant, Akshat Gupta, will investigate the use of ozone to provide a toxic chemical-free and energy efficient alternative to traditional chlorine-based steam sterilization techniques commonly used in the biopharmaceutical industry. Their research, entitled "Ozone-Based Steam-In-Place Sterilization of Bioreactors", will study an ozone-generating system designed and manufactured by Massachusetts-based MKS Instruments for specific applications at Massachusetts biopharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Wyeth and Millipore. The outcome will be demonstration of the effectiveness of this process for stringent applications, so that the Massachusetts biopharmaceutical industry can significantly reduce its use of toxic chemicals while not adversely impacting its resource consumption.

Dr. Yoon demonstrates ozone generator, which his research shows to be an effective alternative to chemical sterilization for bioreactors
