The Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture is hosting TURI’s community grantees for an online legislative briefing and recognition event. Join us to learn how Massachusetts communities are working to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in firefighting gear, personal care products, cleaning and more.

  • Personal care and household products marketed to Black women: Silent Spring Institute and Resilient Sisterhood Project worked with social media influencers to create content on chemicals associated with endocrine disruption, asthma and cancer. This highly effective project piloted a new way to share information on toxic chemicals and health.
  • PFAS in firefighters’ protective gear: Nantucket PFAS Action Group worked with the Nantucket and Fall River Fire Departments to replace PFAS-laden turnout gear with safer alternatives and monitor the effects of switching to lower-PFAS gear. Their research, educational resources, and partnership building are helping to accelerate the move toward safer protective equipment for firefighters.
  • PFAS in water and everyday products: Community Action Works and Clean Water Fund provided webinars and fact sheets for communities affected by PFAS contamination. They provided community members with information about health and environmental concerns, safer alternatives and practical steps to reduce the use of PFAS.
  • Safer cleaning and disinfection: Informed Green Solutions created a detailed handbook for schools on safer cleaning and disinfection. Their materials have been used widely by municipalities and schools, helping them to avoid chemicals associated with asthma and other adverse health effects.

In this briefing, you'll hear briefly about the outcomes of each of these projects, which were supported by the TURI Community Grant program. We will also share information about the industry and small business grants that are currently available. The deadline for applications is July 22, 2022.
