Combat the Coronavirus and Protect Health by Using Products with Safer Active Ingredients

EPA’s List N provides information on disinfection products that meet EPA’s criteria for effectiveness against COVID-19. The director of the TURI Lab Jason Marshall performed a sample search on List N and identified a number of products that contain safer active ingredients.

The full list of safer active disinfectant ingredients identified by EPA’s Safer Choice program include hydrogen peroxidealcohol (isopropyl alcohol or ethanol), citric acid, and lactic acid, among others. The products listed are safer for health and the environment than products that contain bleach, phenols or quaternary ammonium compounds (“quats”).

TURI has identified products containing hypochlorous acid as safer than products that contain bleach. In tests conducted in TURI’s lab, hypochlorous acid generated from tablets generated less airborne chlorine than a bleach solution.

The combination of hydrogen peroxide and peroxyacetic acid (peracetic acid) has caused the initial onset of asthma in some individuals while triggering asthma symptoms in others. Avoid products that contain the combination of these ingredients. Never mix cleaning chemicals.

In the list, TURI eliminated combination products that are marketed for both cleaning and disinfection. In order to disinfect effectively, it is necessary to clean first. Always be sure to follow manufacturer’s directions for use.
