Webinars

Webinars are an ongoing offering from TURI. Webinars are open to anyone who is interested in the subject matter. Registration is required but the webinars are free of charge. Most webinars offer TURA continuing education credits.

Past Webinars  Summary
Identifying Safer Solvents Using Hansen Solubility Parameters Understanding solubility is fundamental to dealing with the safety implications of chemicals and their replacements. TURI has invited Prof Steven Abbott, one of the authors of HSPiP, to give a webinar using the software live to quickly show some of the basics of Hansen Solubility Parameter then to address common applications for the software like finding a solvent blend to replace a current solvent, identifying plasticisers that are more compatible with a given polymer, using smart “read-across” between chemicals and making rational choices about protective gloves. Access the webinar.
Safer Materials for Janitorial Cleaning Heidi Wilcox, TURI’s Laboratory and Field Technical Specialist, joins Rex Morrison of Process Cleaning for Healthy Schools (PCHS) Consortium, Inc. to show how janitorial cleaning can be accomplished with safer, faster, and less costly processes and alternatives.  You will learn about practical techniques and specific products you can deploy immediately for a ‘low-hanging fruit’ TUR initiative. Access the webinar.
The Business Value of Improved Environmental Performance in Metal Finishing Presented in collaboration with the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute, this web-based training will feature two experts in the Metal Finishing industry who will discuss how recent developments in more environmentally friendly techniques can help lower costs, reduce health risks, meet 'green' expectations in the marketplace, and improve competitive positioning. Access the webinar.
Beyond the MSDS: Finding Information to Inform Decision Making about Chemical Hazards Find out about databases and other resources for gathering chemical safety information from TURI's Research and Reference Specialist, Mary Butow.  Finding hazard information about new or obscure substances can be difficult, but TURI has numerous resources to help researchers, industrial engineers, product designers, and anyone else who needs authoritative chemical information.  Ms. Butow shows you how to access these extensive knowledge bases to make better choices for safer chemical alternatives.  Access the webinar.
European Union Directive: REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals) This webinar provides fresh content on REACH.  Although REACH is not US legislation, it nevertheless has great impact on US producers because the EU is the world's largest commercial market in monetary terms.  To compete in world markets, North American firms need to be aware of and comply with REACH's provisions, and this is true even for companies well down the supply chain that only sell to domestic customers.  The presentation will describe key provisions, define terms, and provide updated information on the status of REACH's implementation. Access the webinar.
Manage Training for Reducing Gymnast Exposure to Flame Retardants in Foam Pits In this webinar, learn about recent updates in efforts to reduce gymnast exposure to flame retardants in this one-hour webinar. Topics covered will include levels of flame retardants in gyms and gymnasts. why flame retardants can be harmful, and what can be done about it, as well as new content on maintaining fire safety without the use of flame retardants, engaging with the fire prevention/protection community, practical aspects of replacing a foam pit, and availability of flame retardant free equipment. Access the webinar.
Nanotechnology Use & Implications Nanotechnology promises a wide range of opportunities for innovation in areas like biomedical devices, improved electronic devices, clean energy technology and materials engineering. TURI's research program looks at two aspects of nanotechnology: its possibilities for producing safer alternatives to traditional materials, and its potential impacts on environmental and occupational health. This webinar will provide the latest findings on EH&S issues related to nanotechnology. Access the webinar.
